On the flip side, one can go to the Apple menu, select System Preferences, and click Bluetooth. They need to ensure that the Bluetooth is on as one doesn’t know that things happen. They can put both AirPods in their charging case and open the lid. Besides that, one needs to press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes white. One can go back to the Bluetooth preferences window on their Mac and select AirPods from the Devices list. Lastly, they can click on connect option. 

If one can still listen to the sound from their Mac speakers, then they can check either the Bluetooth or volume drop-down menu in the menu bar and ensure their AirPods are selected as the output.
