Uk Inflation Rate Drops for a Third Month Running to 10.1%

In January, the United Kingdom’s inflation rates dropped for the third month in a row, bolstering hopes that the cost-of-living problem has crested and prices will fall dramatically later this year.

According to the Office of National Statistics, inflation decreased from 10.5% in the preceding month to 10.1% over the past 12 months. In October, the consumer price index reached a high of 11.1%. As energy prices start to level out and price hikes brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are no longer considered for calculating inflation, the The Bank of England estimates that prices will fall sharply in the second quarter of this year.

However, the numbers do not provide consumers who are feeling the pinch of inflation, which is still at heights last seen in early 1980s, with any immediate comfort. In recent weeks, a wave of strikes has swept the nation as public sector workers, including train drivers, teachers, nurses, and paramedics, demand higher pay.

Alpesh Paleja, the chief economist for the Confederation of British Industry, claims that a further decline in inflation over January indicates a change in the direction of pricing pressures. However, with pipeline cost pressures and inflation expected to stay strong this year, consumers and companies will undoubtedly continue to experience discomfort.

While lower inflation was recorded last month due to reduced costs for apparel, transportation, and restaurant meals, consumers are still facing higher food and energy costs. In comparison to the 16.9% increase that was recorded a month earlier, food prices increased by 16.8% from January to January in 2017. Gas and electricity were factored into the 11.8% increase in housing prices.
