Substance use is one of the most pervasive addictions globally, with various options ranging from marijuana to prescription stimulants and methamphetamines, each carrying its own stigma, especially in developed countries like the USA. Shocking statistics reveal that approximately 48.5 million people—about 16.7% of Americans aged 12 and older—struggled with a substance use disorder in the past year. Among them, around 27.2 million individuals (9.7%) reported facing a drug use disorder. The rise in drug abuse can be attributed to numerous factors, which extend beyond youth and poverty. The vast amount of content available on the internet often fuels this alarming trend.

Confronting this addiction effectively means seeking guidance and support from organizations that offer hope and healing. One standout organization is Ebony House. Founded by a visionary Elbertzena Fontinote, this organization is committed to helping individuals lead healthy, fulfilling lives. Recently, Dr. Che Jordan, the President of Ebony House, shared insights exclusively with Business Talk about the organization’s comprehensive approach to healthcare and his pivotal role within it. Here’s a summary of the enlightening conversation.

A Beacon of Hope for the needy

Ebony House has transformed from a treatment center into a beacon of hope for diverse communities in need. It offers an array of healing services, including HIV outreach initiatives, outpatient mental health clinics for children, adult counseling, and residential treatment. Committed to healing and development, it crafts personalized treatment plans that address each client’s unique requirements. Its therapeutic services empower individuals to overcome addiction and rebuild family connections. Clients emerge with renewed confidence, a stronger sense of self-worth, and enhanced respect and awareness.

Moreover, Ebony House is dedicated to recognizing the individual needs surrounding cultural identity, religion, and sexual orientation. Dr. Che emphasizes, “We provide referrals to educational and vocational programs tailored to the treatment plan.” This approach not only promotes successful reintegration into the community but also equips individuals with essential skills to resist substance abuse and foster healthier interpersonal relationships with family and peers.

Helping people from Not Giving Up

Ebony House is dedicated to tackling the challenges of illicit substance use by offering more than conventional therapies; it embodies a holistic approach to recovery. As the President, Dr. Che has ensured the foundation of their strategy is rooted in empathy, gratitude, and respect—principles that foster a supportive environment for accessing essential resources. Patients are encouraged to express their feelings and experiences through individual and group counseling sessions, creating a sense of community and understanding.

A key component of their methodology is a robust 12-step program. This initiative not only guides patients towards spiritual growth but also encourages them to assess their progress. By recognizing their strengths and confronting their weaknesses, individuals remain committed to sobriety.

The benevolent mind guiding the organization

Dr. Che’s inspiring leadership is a core driver of Ebony House’s innovative approach to drug abuse treatment. He carries forward the organization’s legacy with a servant leadership philosophy that fosters patience, humility, and a genuine connection with individuals in the community. “I strive to meet people where they are in their lives and offer the support they need to embrace a healthy lifestyle,” explains the benevolent doctor.

His leadership philosophy transcends the traditional emphasis on titles and status. He believes, “Titles and positions should serve as catalysts to elevate humanitarian efforts, driven by genuine intent and heartfelt commitment, rather than as a means for self-promotion. When leaders become entranced by their titles or personal agendas, they risk losing the compassion and empathy essential for effective leadership.” Rather than seeking personal accolades, Dr. Che is tirelessly guiding Ebony House to shine as a beacon of hope, illuminating paths for those engulfed by darkness and helping them rediscover the light.

Accomplishments that hold a profound impact

“Witnessing individuals graduate from our programs is my accomplishment,” reflects Dr. Che. With a life inspired by the humility exemplified by Jesus Christ, he is committed to serving others, prioritizing the empowerment of those who may have lost their way. Under his invaluable leadership, the organization has effectively tackled some of the most pressing substance use issues. For instance, the increasing opioid use coupled with mental health crises makes it difficult to support patients as they reintegrate into society while maintaining sobriety.

In response to the insufficient aftercare that led to numerous relapses, Dr. Che made a pivotal decision to hire alumni who have been sober for 15, 20, and even 30 years. Their invaluable experiences significantly enhance patients’ morale and help them maintain their sobriety.

On a Mission to help people get better

Dr. Che is passionately committed to helping individuals conquer their addictions, but he also has other plans as well. His organization is creating a campus that will provide additional beds, enhanced support for HIV patients, and an expanded clinic for children’s services. To turn this vision into a reality, they are actively raising funds. The organization is already leveraging advanced software tools to optimize business operations and will continue to embrace innovative solutions. These tools will also facilitate gathering vital information, tracking metrics, and aggregating data to enhance the services they provide to the community.
