Today, work culture plays an important role. Every employee looks for satisfaction and relations with their seniors rather than following instructions all the time. Therefore, it becomes imp to ask yourself whether you are a leader or a boss?

If you are not sure about Boss vs. leader, read our post until the end to know more about it.

Let’s look at all the 12 characteristics of Boss vs leaders one by one.

12 Defining Characteristics of  Boss Vs Leader Are

1. A leader guides you; the Boss commands you.

This is one of the most important characteristics when we talk about Boss vs leader. A boss will always tell you what you have to do. But a leader will tell you how and why you can do it.

Leadership majorly focuses on the why aspect because it leads to sustainable learning and interchangeable with other situations. But sustainable learning and self-reliance are major obstacles to micromanaging and toxic leadership.

2. The way of determining success is different.

Bosses define their success by power, position, or hierarchy in the business. But, a leader – notably a born leader – leads anywhere and everywhere.

Leaders determine their success by the enthusiasm and impact of the people they lead.

3. Bosses Choose Authority. Leaders choose to Influence.

.A boss relies on positional power to make an impact. On the other hand, leadership magnetism is not reliant on power or position.

Some of the most incredible leaders never show authority over the people they influenced.

4. Leaders Concentrate on What’s Right.

A boss directs on what is right now – setting aside the daily fires. A leader solely focused on doing what is right.

This characteristic is important to understand while discussing Boss vs. leader as an ability to impose your decisions through the chaos at the moment makes the difference between success and failure.

5. Leaders Share High Emotional Connections.

Leaders are people and emotional experts; on the other hand, a boss is a subject matter expert. Exceptional leaders are compassionate, albeit not emotional; therefore, they have incredible strategies for resolving conflict in teams.

But what you need to understand here is that being sensitive means how in-tune you are with feelings. Emotions are your reaction to those reactions or a situation. We all know that we can’t control our feelings, but we can control our reactions to those feelings, which is our emotional display.

6. Leaders Run by Their Legacies. Bosses Work By Their Competition.

A boss’s decisions are primarily focused on the competition. Leaders stay conscious of their competition but work with a legacy definition in mind. It also promotes not making potentially bad choices at the moment and concentrating on the future.

7. Leaders Want You to Be Successful Than They Are. A Boss Always Desires to Be the Boss.

It is a significant difference between a boss vs leader. A boss always desires to be your Boss. A leader is like a guardian – he wants you to do better.

A leader would proudly make you to ‘the boss’ and develop your career progression system to make it a reality.

8. Leaders are driven by Passion and Purpose. Bosses are Induced by Fear.

Bosses are driven by fear and resistance. But, a leader stays motivated by passion and purpose, even during challenging business development and transformation.

9. Leaders Get Happy by Seeing Others’ Successes.

A boss gets joy from being known for doing a great job. Likewise, leaders get enjoyment out of seeing others rewarded for the excellent results of their passion.

Think of living in a world where everyone had the same happiness principle as a leader; then it would be amazing.

10. Leaders Develop Self-Accountability.

If something goes wrong, the Boss holds you liable. But, on the other hand, a leader instills the determination and passion from within you to develop self-accountability.

It is an incredible way to grow and encourages sustainable success all around.

11. Leaders Make You Feel Successful

Bosses have you to make sure that they perform well for their success. But leaders want you to celebrate failures as you will learn something out of them.

One of the major characteristics of Boss vs leader is that a leader links individual progress to the success of those they guide. If those people do not supersede, the leaders fail in both their minds – and hearts.

12. Leaders Strengthen Your Confidence. Bosses Create Fear.

Bosses let you wonder or fear just enough so that you show them what they want to see. At the least, bosses condition you not to speak what they do not desire to hear. This is why bosses don’t require a dispute management strategy – they just require everyone to agree.

Leaders increase your confidence and trust, so you will inform them what they need to hear. They understand leadership and trust are important to be influential.

It may not be pleasant, but getting the complete picture – the good and the bad – and being sure about it is one of the characteristics of a leader that promotes continuous growth, peace, and success.
