In a similar vein, tennis is a sport of rivalry that is popular all over the world and has produced some incredible champions whose names will live on in tennis lore forever. Comparing players from various eras is particularly challenging when discussing the greatest tennis stars of all time. Nevertheless, we have compiled a list of the top 10 male tennis players of all time.

Top 10 Male Tennis Players of All Time

1. Roger Federer

Tennis player Roger Federer is a creative force in the world of tennis. He has 20 Grand Slam titles under his belt and, overall, 103 titles to his name in his playing career, which is second only to Jimmy Connors in terms of trophies won. After dropping his final career match at the Laver Cup in September 2022, Roger Federer said goodbye to his illustrious tennis career. Even so, he still holds the #1 position among the top 10 male tennis players of all time.

2. Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal will always be one of the top 10 male tennis players of all time. The most male player to have ever competed in the Open Era, he has won 22 Grand Slams. Given that he has won an incredible 14 of his 22 Grand Slams while competing on clay courts, he is regarded as the best clay court player in the world. With 14 victories, Nadal holds the record for most victories at the French Open (a clay-court tournament).

3. Novak Djokovic

Tennis legend Novak Djokovic is the first person to beat Federer at all four Grand Slams was Djokovic, not Rafael Nadal, as he defeated Federer in the 2014 Wimbledon final. As the player with the best opportunity to surpass Federer’s major record, Djokovic had also surpassed what seemed to be a fading Nadal. However, both Nadal and Federer have put an end to those hopes as they have both had a significant comeback in recent years.

4. Pete Sampras

When Sampras was at his peak, power serves were starting to become the norm. His athleticism and capacity for chip-and-charge play set him apart as well. Sampras never had the same baseline ability as Andre Agassi, but he didn’t have to. The 14 major titles held by the American say it all. When Andre Agassi was defeated in the 2002 US Open final, the best American tennis player in ever retired, giving his career the perfect finale.

5. Rod Laver

Laver was one of the finest tennis players in history as well as one of the most significant. He bridged the gap between the amateur and Open (or professional) eras of the sport. Although Laver holds the record for the most singles titles in tennis history with 200, it was his second calendar-year sweep of all four Grand Slam events in 1969 – just seven years after his first Slam sweep! – that will always stand as a testament to his talent. In his career, Laver won 11 singles grand slams.

6. Bjorn Borg

When John McEnroe defeated the Swedish great at the 1981 US Open, he passed Borg for the top spot, which was the turning point in his career. By missing the post-match press conference, exiting the stadium, driving a car straight to JFK Airport, and departing the city, Borg created the biggest “What if?” in the history of men’s tennis. After a few months, he made his first retirement with 11 grand slam victories. He wasn’t even 26.

7. John McEnroe

He is without a doubt one of the greatest tennis players in history, both in terms of talent and temperament. In his playing years, this American tennis player amassed a total of 77 career victories. He was renowned for both his temperament and his playing abilities. He has won 155 titles overall throughout the Open Era, which includes both singles and doubles.

8. Jimmy Connors

One of the all-time greats in tennis was Jimmy Connors. He was a player during the same era as legendary players like John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg. However, with 109 overall tournament victories, and 8 grand slams all through the course of his career, Connors continues to hold the record for the most men’s single titles. He held the top spot for 160 weeks in a row as a result. In the year 2007, Roger Federer broke this record.

9. Ivan Lendl

Ivan Lendl had a successful decade at the top, collecting at least one major every year between 1981 and 1991 and won eight grand slams in total. He is regarded as the player who revolutionised how pros treated their food. The Czech-born player managed to spend a total of 270 weeks at the top of the world rankings during his career, securing his place among the top 10 male tennis players of all time during a time when Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe ruled the men’s game.

10. Andre Agassi

Long before Agassi reached the professional ranks, he was considered to be one of the best ball strikers in the history of the game. In the late 1990s, Agassi experienced a significant career slump. He dropped to No. 141 in the rankings in 1997, but he didn’t give up; instead, he fought his way back to the top spot in the world in 1999. Agassi retired in September 2006 after 101 weeks as the top player in the world.
