Top 10 Biggest Airports in the World

Since the very first airline was founded in 1914, air travel has grown incredibly popular. To accommodate the ever-increasing demand, hundreds of thousands of airports have been built throughout the world, and they have had to continuously grow larger and more complex. The biggest airports in the world are huge right now. In the near future, expansion initiatives are predicted to cause several of them to grow in size. In this post, we’ll look at the top 10 biggest airports in the world by total size.

Biggest Airports in the World

1. King Fahd International

Despite not being the busiest, it is unquestionably the biggest airport in the world.  Also referred as the Dammam Airport, is located 31 kilometres (19 miles) northwest of Dammam’s city centre. There are roughly 27 airlines operating here, and Flynas, Saudia, and Aramco Aviation use it as a hub. The airport’s current design can accommodate up to 12 million people annually, although future additions are expected to increase this number to 16 million.

2. Denver International

Denver International is the largest airport in North America and the second biggest airport in the world. With a length of 4.88 kilometres (3.03 mi), it also has the longest commercial runway on the continent. The main terminal of the airport is covered by a distinctive tent-like ceiling structure. Denver Air Connection, Southern Airways Express, United Airlines, and Frontier Airlines all have hubs at the airport. Additionally, there are daily flights to more than 200 other locations.

3. Dallas Fort Worth International

Dallas Fort Worth International is not only one of the biggest airports in the world but also one of the busiest. Los Angeles, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada, are the busiest international destinations served by the airport. Due to its size, it has many attributes with cities, including its own postal code, city designation, and departments for emergency services, law enforcement, and medicine. The airport is the largest carbon-free airport in the world, with five terminals and 168 gates. A few freight carriers use it as a hub, in addition to American carriers and Southern Airways Express.

4. Orlando International Airport

With more than 130,000 people passing through daily and little less than 50 million yearly, this airport serves as Florida’s main hub. It is only 10 km (6 miles) southeast of Orlando, one of Florida’s largest cities. 33 of the 39 airlines that fly passengers via this airport are passenger airlines. It serves as the hub for Silver Airways, a minor airline, as well as JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines.

5. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

About 16.1 kilometres (10 miles) from the heart of Washington, DC, the airport is situated in the US state of Virginia. With a size of nearly 12,000 acres, it is one of the largest airports in the world. International and domestic flights, including those to Denver, Colorado, and San Francisco, California, are particularly busy at IAD. Outside of the New York Metro Area, it handles more international flight traffic than any other airport in the Mid-Atlantic.

6. Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX)

The world’s largest single-building airport terminal—measuring 700,000 m2 in size—can be found at China’s largest airport, which is situated on the border between Langfang and Beijing in the country’s capital. Beijing Daxing is the only airport in the world with double-deck landing and departure platforms. Beijing Daxing uses four commercial runways and one military runway. China United Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines all have hubs at PKX.

It has the highest volume of overseas flights and routes of any airport in Texas in 2019 and serviced more than 45 million people. IAH has five terminals that are all airside connected to one another by the Skyway, and there is a subway that runs on the ground side that connects each terminal to the airport hotel. The terminals and grounds of the airport are also home to a sizable collection of public artworks created by Texans.

8. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)

Shanghai has two international airports, serving more than 25 million of its citizens. The biggest of the two airports, Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), is magnificent. While Shanghai-Hongqiao, the other airport in the city, mostly handles local and regional flights, PVG handles the majority of international flights while also accommodating certain domestic aircraft. Among the numerous airlines that use this airport frequently, China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, and Air China use it as a key hub.

9. Cairo International Airport

The airport serves as a significant regional transportation centre and is both Egypt’s busiest airport and the country’s main international travel entry point. The distance from Cairo, the Egyptian capital, to the airport is around 15 kilometres (9.3 mi).  EgyptAir and Nile Air, two of the numerous airlines that fly to and from Cairo International Airport, each use the facility as their main hub. Air Arabia Egypt, Air Cairo, and AlMasria Universal Airlines are other airlines that use this airport as a hub.
