In the digital age, our virtual personas hold the same significance as our real-life personas. Cybercriminals are finding it easier to attack our digital identities through various online activities, including banking, shopping, socializing, and remote work. Your online profile is made up of information such as your name, address, social security number, and bank account details. If this information falls into the wrong hands, it can result in severe issues, including financial fraud and identity theft. Therefore, it is now more crucial than ever to take preventative measures to protect yourself online from these dangers. Here are 8 tips to protect your digital identity.

Tips to Protect Your Digital Identity

1. Create strong & Unique Passwords

Having a strong password is crucial for protecting your online identity. To ensure the security of your account, it is important to create a lengthy and intricate password that includes a variety of numbers, special characters, and both capital and lowercase letters. By doing this, you can reduce the risk of an attacker guessing or stealing your password and gaining access to multiple accounts. You can use password generators to create unique and complex passwords, ranging from strong yet easy-to-pronounce combinations to more intricate character combinations. Alternatively, you can also create your own strong passwords. It’s among the best tips to protect your digital identity.

2. Make Sure to have a Two Factor Authentication

An extra layer of identity verification that comes after your password and login is called multi-factor authentication, and it is getting more and more common. Applications, numeric codes, push alerts, button confirmations, SMS, and emails are some examples of this additional layer. Your accounts’ security becomes stronger by turning on 2FA, which makes it far more difficult for hackers to obtain illegal access. Make sure you activate it because social media accounts are the target of the majority of cyberattacks. Even when you log in with a fresh device, Gmail and YouTube ask you to use specific devices to access them, which is also a type of two-factor authentication.

3. Be aware of phishing scams

Cybercriminals are always coming up with new ways to compromise digital networks. Phishing is a typical method of this kind. Someone might try to pose as a business or another person and send you an unwanted link in an attempt to obtain your confidential data. This could appear as a reliable source and take many different forms, including emails, social media sites, chat and gaming apps, and more. Never open attachments or click on links from sources you are not familiar with, and always confirm the sender of any correspondence. Check for any formatting or grammatical mistakes that don’t seem to belong. It’s one of the crucial tips to protect your digital identity.

4. Safeguard your user credentials and any personal data

Watch out for emails, applications, or websites that ask for a lot of permissions or personal data. Never will your bank, mobile provider, or government agency request your username, password, PIN, or credit card details over text or email. Use caution while disclosing personal information online and choose whom to share it with. Excessive disclosure of personal details may increase your vulnerability to identity theft. Choose carefully what you share in confidence and what you post on social media. Cookies that your browser collects can be used to aggregate a large amount of your data and connect you to your family, school, and other connections. Thus, be sure to delete your browser’s history.

5. Every now and again, change your password

Changing your passwords on a frequent basis is crucial, particularly for high-risk accounts like banking and email. But it’s crucial to remember that changing your password alone is insufficient; you also need to make sure the new one is strong and distinct. It could get tiresome for you to consistently change your passwords at time intervals. However, because managing and creating passwords is so important, you can utilize password generators and supervisors to assist you. To be reminded when you need to update your login details, you can also set up a personal alarm.

6. Do not share personal data over Wifi

It is of utmost importance to exercise caution when using public WiFi. Always remember to use unprotected networks only for simple tasks that do not involve sensitive information or passwords. It is highly recommended to never perform online banking on an unprotected network. Similarly, shopping online using a public WiFi network is a risky proposition, even if your cell phone stores your credit card details and does not require you to input any password. Putting it simply, protect your sensitive data and avoid the risk of being hacked, and be mindful while using public WiFi.

7. Never join up or log in to other websites using your social media details

The majority of people just use their social media accounts to register for websites or online services, and as long as you’re logged into those social networks, accessing third-party websites is quick and simple. But doing so may put your privacy at risk. Even if it’s a practical choice, using your account’s login information to get into another account may expose all of your personal data to the other website. Even worse, these external accounts can be accessed by someone who steals the social media login credentials.

8. Use a secure cloud service

Cloud storage is a great way to store backup data, but if you don’t choose your cloud services carefully, you may expose your data to hackers. Certain cloud services offer file encryption and decryption on a local level in addition to backup and storage. This means that your files are encrypted on your computer and securely stored on the cloud by the provider. Consequently, there’s a greater likelihood that nobody will be able to access your files, not even server administrators or hosting companies.

Conclusion

Those are the 8 tips to protect your digital identity. Today’s reality makes being safe online a lifetime worry. Being aware of online identity theft prevention strategies will be necessary as technology develops and advances. Whether you’re browsing privately or on campus, you may significantly increase the safety of your devices by utilizing these tips.
