Fast bowling is a type of talent in and of itself, and only the highest calibre of those who excel can push it to its absolute boundaries. The Indian Premier League is the highest level domestically where we see those boundaries being challenged. At this point, the world’s top bowlers all compete. Fast bowlers can control how the game is played with their raw, devastating pace. Let’s look at the top 10 fastest balls in IPL history and special mentions in IPL 2022 who are leading the extravagant league.

Top 10 Fastest Ball in IPL History

1. Shaun Tait (2011 – 157.71 kmph)

Shaun Tait has delivered the fastest ball in IPL history. Shaun Tait measured a speed of 157.71 kmph while Aaron Finch was a member of the Delhi Daredevils, now known as the Delhi Capitals, in 2011. He was a quick bowler in all of cricket’s competitions, not only the IPL. He participated in 21 games and took 23 wickets while playing for the Rajasthan Royals for four seasons.

2. Lockie Ferguson (2022 – 157.3 kmph)

In IPL 2022, Lockie Ferguson bowled what can certainly be called as the second-fastest ball in IPL history. Lockie, who bowled with a speed of 157.3 kmph against Rajasthan Royals in the final game, was given the trophy for the tournament’s fastest delivery. Ferguson beat Jos Buttler in the championship match against the Rajasthan Royals while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad with that delivery.

3. Umran Malik (2022 – 157 kmph)

With fastest deliveries in IPL history, Umran Malik has continuously generated buzz. He is now India’s fastest bowler, and in the IPL 2022 season, he bowled the third-fastest ball in IPL history.  He represents Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League of cricket. Umran Malik delivered the third-fastest ball in IPL 2022—clocked at 157 kmph—against Rovman Powell of Delhi Capital.

4. Anrich Nortje (2020-156.22 kmph)

South African player Anrich Nortje is exciting to watch. He astounded everyone in the IPL 2020 with his lightning-quick pace, routinely bowling at speeds beyond 150 kph. His amazing speed also allowed him to strike out a lot of batters. In a game between the Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, he threw Jos Buttler a 156.22 Kmph delivery, which Jos Buttler was able to bat at for four runs, resulting in the 4th fastest ball in IPL history.

5. Umran Malik (2022 – 156 kmph)

Umran Malik delivered the fifth-fastest delivery of the IPL yet again. He frequently appears on the list of the fast balls. In the IPL 2022 match against Delhi Capitals, he threw a ball at 156 kph. With his raw speed, he was a challenge for several batsmen during the game.

6. Anrich Nortje (2020 – 155.1 kmph)

Prior to his fastest bowl of 156.22 kmph, Anrich Nortje bowled at a 155.1 kmph for the Delhi Capitals against the Rajasthan Royals, He was faster than any fast-bowler in that game, which made him more dangerous, as we saw in the IPL. He delivered the sixth-fastest ball in the IPL.

7. Umran Malik (2022- 154.8 kmph)

In 2022, while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Umran Malik set a record with his delivery of 154.8 against Delhi Capitals. In the same game, he broke his own records of 154.8 and 156 kmph. Prior to this, Umran delivered a Yorker to M.S. Dhoni in a match against Chennai Super Kings at 154 kph, which was his previous fastest bowl.

8. Anrich Nortje (2020- 154.7 kmph)

Anrich Nortje made his name among the top 10 fastest delivery in the IPL history in 2020. While playing for Delhi Capitals, he bowled a ball at a speed of 154.7 kph against Rajasthan Royals. Later, against Rajasthan Royals, he delivered the ball at a speed of 155.1 kmph, breaking his personal record for the season.

9. Dale Steyn (2012- 154.4 kmph)

One of the best bowlers of his era, Dale Steyn’s balls are among the fastest in the IPL.  Former South African cricketer Dale Steyn made his IPL debut in 2008 and has since featured in 95 matches while claiming 97 wickets. In the 2012 IPL season, Steyn bowled a 154.4 kmph paced ball for the Deccan Chargers.

10. Kagiso Rabada (2020-154.23 kmph)

South African pacer Kagiso Rabada is another outstanding performer. His blitzkrieg deliveries proved to be a trump card for DC in the IPL 2020. For Delhi to advance to the final, he was essential. Rabada, who became one of the best in the league with 30 wickets in 17 games, won the purple cap for taking the most wickets in the 2020 season. In that season, his delivery had a top speed of 154.23 Kmph.

Conclusion

Those were the top 10 fastest ball in IPL history. Super-fast balls and the bowlers that throw them are fascinating to cricket fans all over the world. Lockie Ferguson and Umran Malik gave us two of the fastest balls in IPL history last season. And there will undoubtedly be a lot more deserving recordings in the years to come.
